Basics
The visitor guide is clear that campgrounds with fees must be booked online before arriving.1 Parks Victoria's notice gives the route: book on its bookings site or call 13 1963.6 There is no walk-up system for these sites, so a plan made on the day of travel leaves you with a drive and no place to sleep.
Prices change, and the pages that describe the campgrounds do not print a nightly rate. Visit Grampians sends campers to Parks Victoria for camp fees and how to book, which is the safe route for an up-to-date number.4 Any Grampians National Park fee for a campsite is shown on the booking screen; treat a figure on a third-party page as a guess.
The visitor guide lists the park's campgrounds with a note on each: Boreang is secluded with unsealed access, Borough Huts popular with sealed access, Buandik close to rock art with unsealed access, and Smiths Mill central with sealed access.7 Coppermine, Jimmy Creek, Kalymna, Stapylton, Strachans, Troopers Creek, Wannon Crossing and Plantation complete the list in the same guide.

Site counts come from Parks Victoria's campground pages; fees and availability appear only on the booking site.
Smiths Mill Campground has 28 tent sites with adjacent vehicle parking and five drive-in sites suited to camper-trailers, caravans and campervans.2 Each site holds a maximum of 6 people and none is powered.12 There are shared fire pits, a bush shower and non-flush toilets.13
Its position is the draw. Smiths Mill is 1 km from Mackenzie Falls, with Zumsteins, Reeds Lookout and Boroka Lookout a short drive away.14 Mackenzie Falls is closed for works through 2026, but the lookouts and the Fish Falls walk from Zumsteins stay available.15,16 The camp is a good base for a lookout week.
Borough Huts is close to Halls Gap and, in Parks Victoria's words, perfect for large groups.17 Advance bookings and payments are required year-round there.18 Both camps sit on sealed roads, which suits a family car better than a long unsealed approach.7 Parks Victoria's Mackenzie Falls page says the precinct closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days, and its park page adds Extreme days, so a camp here follows the same fire calendar as the walks.19,20
Stapylton Campground in the north is booked online in advance, and campers bring their own firewood.27 There are pit toilets and untreated tank water, but you should bring drinking water.28 The local mob of kangaroos likes to graze there too.29
Troopers Creek Campground requires all sites to be booked online in advance and has two large group camping areas for up to 16 people.30,24 Jimmy Creek has 13 tent sites, 4 drive-in sites for caravans and campervans and 4 for camper-trailers, and sits halfway between Halls Gap and Dunkeld.21,31 It is 2WD accessible, with shared pit toilets and a cold water shower.32
Buandik Campground has 13 tent sites and four drive-in sites for camper trailers, caravans and campervans, with non-flush toilets and no power.22,33 It is a base for the Billimina and Manja rock art shelters.25 The Billimina Walk is closed after the 2024/25 fires, according to the Parks Victoria notice read on 7 November 2026.34,35 Strachans has 6 vehicle-based sites and two tent-only sites, all booked in advance, and has reopened after major upgrade works.23,36

Free dispersed bush camping is allowed at designated and provisional bush camp areas.3 That is the only free camping the visitor guide describes. Free camping in Grampians National Park does not mean pitching anywhere you like, and the guide asks campers to call into Brambuk to learn more before choosing a spot.39
The rules for these areas are short. No campfires: fuel stoves only.40 Do not clear vegetation, and pitch in a clearing.41 Use a toilet, or else dig a hole at least 20 cm deep well away from streams.42 Leave no trace, and carry all rubbish out.11 A camp that follows the rules leaves nothing behind, and the next campers find the clearing as it was. Choose a flat, open patch away from streams and dead branches, and keep the footprint of your tent small.
Bush camping suits self-reliant walkers with a stove, enough water for the whole stay and a way to carry out their waste. It does not suit first-time campers or anyone expecting a toilet block. If you are new to camping, start with a booked campground where facilities and a neighbour are close.

Dogs and domestic pets are not permitted in the park, and dogs on a lead are permitted at Plantation Campground only, in State forest.37,43 Hunting, firearms, generators and chainsaws are also not permitted.38 Leave the generator at home and pack a battery light instead.
Fire danger sets the pace of the season. Anyone entering parks and forests in bushfire season should check the Fire Danger Rating and days of Total Fire Ban.9 Campfires cannot be lit on Total Fire Ban days, although gas cookers are fine for cooking.44 On Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating days the park is closed for public safety.45

Visit Grampians lists caravan and camping parks across the region, with sites from powered pitches to bush settings.46 In Halls Gap there are Discovery Parks Halls Gap, formerly Breeze Holiday Parks, and the NRMA Halls Gap Holiday Park.47,48 Wanderlust Glamping introduced glamping to the Grampians region in 2015.26
Beyond the park gate, Horsham Holiday Park is a base for exploring the Grampians, and Acacia Caravan Park is a family-owned park in the heart of Ararat.49,50 Visit Grampians adds that the night sky over the campgrounds is bright with constellations and a clear Southern Cross.51
If you want a bed rather than a tent, the Halls Gap guide on this site sets out hostels, lodges and cottages by type. Booking early matters on event weekends, and the tour cards below show how two-day tours bundle a bed and park fees into a single price for visitors who would rather not carry a tent.
A camp gives you dawn and dusk in the park, when wildlife is most active,52 and a night sky with little light. The 13-hour small-group tour sold on this site gives you daytime stops and a drive back to Melbourne. Choose by what you want from the Grampians: the evening hours or the day.
Two-day tours bundle a bed. One GetYourGuide listing describes basic dormitory-style accommodation, for adults aged 18 and over only, while another lists 1 night of accommodation with 3 meals and park fees included. They remove the gear, the booking and much of the driving, and the price is for the bed as well as the tour.
Check closures before you commit to a hike-in camp. As of the Parks Victoria notice read on 7 November 2026, the Fortress Walk and Hike-in Campground remain closed to visitors because of track damage from the 2024/25 summer bushfires.53,35 Parks Victoria's conditions page lists all closures, and a call to Brambuk confirms it.
